12d Solutions has released 12d Model 14
As usual with a 12d Model upgrade there are 100s of new features.
The big news for this version are the enhancements 12d Model’s BIM capability, the huge improvements to 12d Field (Pickup), and to drafting and plotting.
Here is what you need to know:
- 12d Model 14 is installed alongside 12d Model 12.
You can have both versions on your computer at the same time.
- Upgrading your projects to V14 is a one way street.
Once it is saved in V14 you can’t go back.
- Configuration and library files that you have setup in V12 can be used in V14.
You must manually copy these files from V12 to V14
Upgrading to 12d Model 14 has three steps:
- Download and install 12d Model 14
The new version can be downloaded from the ‘Software Downloads’ page on the 12d Forum
12d Model 14 can be installed alongside 12d Model 12. It’s o.k. to have both versions on the same computer
You’ll get separate desktop icons for each version, and you choose which version you will use
- Install the authorisation file for 12d Model 14
You will need a new authorisation file for 12d Model 14
If you are in NSW, ACT or SA email your request to email@example.com
If you are anywhere else in Australia email your request to firstname.lastname@example.org
If you are in New Zealand or Fiji, email your request to email@example.com
If you are anywhere else in the world, email your request to you local distributor
- Copy your configuration and library files from 12 to 14
Configuration files for 12d Model 12 are stored in \12\user (C:\12d\12.00\user)
and your library files are stored in \12\user_lib (C:\12d\12.00\user_lib)Copy the configuration files from \12\user to \14\user
Copy the library files from\12\user_lib to \14\user_libAll of the configuration files from 12d Model 12 will work in 12d Model 14 EXCEPT for the master environment file (env.4d) and the environment configuration file env_configs.4d
These files may not exist in your \12\user folder, and if they do not, then (happy days) 12d Model 14 will work perfectly.
If either of these files are present in your \12\user folder, we suggest that you do not copy them to \14\user, start 12d Model 14, and see if anything is missing, or does not work as expected. If you are in NSW, ACT or SA, and you need assistance with installation or the configuration files (env.4d or env_configs.4d), please contact EXDS Support
If you are in any other region, please contact your local support team.
Some thoughts on the \user folder
It is easy for the \user folder to become bloated with unnecessary files, and for old versions of files in that folder to reduce the capability of 12d Model 14
Now is the time to do a little housework, to delete unnecessary files.
Most of the files in \user end with the extension ‘.4d’
Most of the files in the \user folder can be edited inside 12d Model. If you edit the file inside 12d Model and save it, a backup of the old version will be saved.
For example if you edit the linestyles file (linestyl.4d) inside 12d Model, and save the file, the old version will be renamed linestyl.4d.1
If you edit the file again and save it, and you will have two backups; linestyl.4d.1 and linestyl.4d.2
You should use Windows Explorer to check the contents of the \12\user folder before you copy the contents to \14\user
Any files that end in .1 .2 .3 .4 etc should be deleted.
It is possible that files in your \12\user folder will reduce the capability of 12d Model 14.
It happens like this:
Each version of 12d Model is released with enhancements to the configuration files
For example the linestyles provided with 12d Model 14 are more comprehensive than the linestyles provided with 12d Model 12.
But if you have edited the V12 linestyl.4d file, and you copy that file to \14\user\ the linestyles available to you will always be based on 12d Model 12
You will not have access to any new linestyles added by 12d Solutions for use in 12d Model 14
If you are not sure, the easiest way to check whether you need a particular file is to not copy it to \user\14 and see if anything breaks.
If you need assistance with this part of the upgrade, and you are in NSW, ACT, or SA, please contact EXDS Support.
We suggest that the following files should be considered for retirement if they exist in your \12\user folder
